Cultist

The cultist is finished!

This was quite a quick paintjob - 3 or 4 hours - but I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I took some snapshots while working on it to show the process:

The undercoat is key - one black, one brown from the sides and one bone from above. This gives the model a natural light from above and gives me a lot of definition for free. One could basically just give it a few different washes, pick out some details and call it a day.

This is after said washes, some drybrushing and highlights on the skin. Also painted the metals brown to give 'em a really rusty feel.

Almost ready. Painted the base with homemade texture paint (mix dark brown acrylic colour, some sand, a dash of PVA glue, add a little water, put i a bottle and give it a shake).

Paint base and final details. Easy peasy!

  1. Nice. I like the white walker vibe. The cool blue and white with the reds of the base is a loverly contrast.

It's also interesting to see a WIP. A tutorial on the bases would be great.

    2. I'd like to see that tutorial as well... :) (as I see it you haven't made one yet...) Love these bases, especially the ones for the nurgle figures you have made recently.

  2. Great work on the cultists! Thanks for the walk through on your painting process for the miniature. Impressive work for only a few hours (not sure I could pull that off in such a short time frame). I love his baleful eyes! The blood (?) on his bases is also a nice touch.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

  3. Really great and some very useful tips to speed up paint on some projects. Brilliant.

Why does this guy reminds me of an iron maiden cover... Eddie?, is it you?

    1. I hadn´t thought about that, but he´s the spitting image of Eddie! Thank´s for pointing that out (though Madien is one of my favourite bands so there might have been some unconscious inspiration going on...)

  4. Aw-yeah Jeff - that is bad-ass - I'm insanely jealous of your skills!

Thanks for the step by step too - very interesting seeing your approach to painting.

    1. Yeah - the eyes turned out pretty well.
Thank Brian Nelson for the gut - it´s just a standard zombie torso - though I tried to enhance it´s pot-belly with the paintjob.

  6. That is a really nice looking figure, and a great technique! Thanks so much for sharing. I'ma have to follow your blog now.

I just did a post on a similar undershading technique, but with drybrushing instead of sprays: http://mdarrow.blogspot.com/2014/01/undershading.html

    1. Yep - It´s the same general principle. Spryys are just way quicker (and as they are a spray the really mimic the way light falls on a mini which enchances the effect)

  7. I love the way the skin turned on this one! I'm thinking of doing something similar for my Deadzone Plague minis – would you mind detailing what washes and sprays were used for it?
