Jes Goodwin is, together with John Blanche, the mastermind behind the distinctive look of the Warhammer 40.000 universe. He is arguably one of the best miniature designers in the world and was head of GW's plastics division.
He also invented the skaven.
I have always been fascinated by his beautifully rendered pencil sketches, perhaps even more so than the models themselves. Whenever I happen upon one of his sketches while browsing the worldwide interwebs I'll try to add it to this gallery.

ReplyDeletePlease do! I´d very much appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI´m also collecting stuff for a John Blanche gallery BTW...
Hi Jeff, this is all very flattering, haven't been head of GW's plastics division for years though, these days it's a much bigger job than one man can handle!

Mr. Goodwin: I am a collector of original sci-fi art and would love to contact you as I am a big fan of yours. Please send me an email if you have a chance! Thank you. grahambarey@gmail.com
DeleteHaha! Alright - I'll change that to "was head of GWs plastics division" then...
ReplyDeleteStill one of the best miniature designers in the world though. Really glad you and John dropped by - I never expected such distinguished guests...
Cheers!
Yeah I couldn't agree more , His original terminator sketches were diligently studied by my schoolboy self. I credit JB and JG as the foremost inspiration in my art and design tutology respectively and both have a had a huge influence on my work. and still do for that matter.. personally really like the most recent elder sketches. I wish the black library would reissue the gothic and the eldritch , so I dont have pay the ridiculous prices on amazon though.
ReplyDeleteI agree - they should re-release it. Preferably an updated version with some of the new stuff (or even better a lot of the new stuff).
DeleteI did buy a copy the minute it came out luckily... It really is a beautiful tome - not just the artwork itself, but the layout and design of the book is top notch.
I had a chance to meet Jes Goodwin (as did many GW fans) at Games Day Canada 2002 (I think it was 2002... my memory's a bit hazy on that). He and Gav Thorpe gave a little presentation, and later on, he had his sketchbook on display. I have to admit, I was a bit fanboyish at the time... about as bad as a teenage Twilight fan when meeting Robert Pattison. I noticed a sketch of some demiurge (possible evolution of Squats), and snapped a pic with my digital camera. Jes saw me doing that, politely asked me to delete the pic (which I promptly did), and explained that since nothing in the book was set in stone just yet, he'd rather that the pics within not get circulated at all. Totally understandable, and I was embarassed to have not thought of that to begin with. Seeing that sketchbook in person though... it was like seeing raw creative genius completely undistilled and unfiltered.
ReplyDeleteThere's something about being gently chided by someone English... the results are the equal to being torn a new one by a US Marine drill sergeant... ;)
DeleteBut in a nice, civilised way!
DeleteWhat a treasure trove you have here - great to see this collection. I love Jes' line sketches - the techpriest concept is fantastic - a real peak into the mind of the best designer out there.
ReplyDeleteI also second calls for a re-issue of The Gothic and the Eldritch!!
Alas most of your Dark Eldar images have disappeared.
ReplyDeleteDamn it! I never should have hotlinked them...
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI am working at a snowboard company and we are looking for artists for upcoming design. As a Warhammer fan I thought of Jes Goodwin. Is this a possibility? If so, how can I get a message to him?
Thanks.
I can be reached at Zerstoyer@gmail.com
Ummm... I´ll check but I don´t think he´d be very interested to be honest.
DeleteIs there any hope of the Sisters of Battle /Witch Hunters getting a plastic army and a real codex?
ReplyDeleteI was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
ReplyDeleteliver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
