Sword and Sorcery pt.III

I spent the evening watching a documentary about Monty Python and finishing up the shield for the Tzeentchii champion. Somehow that combination felt oddly proper as Tzeentch, along with Nurgle, are the two chaos gods with a sense of humour.

I´m really quite happy with the model. It was fun painting something really gaudy and flamboyant while avoiding making it tacky.
I used a lot of colours I don´t normally use on this one, and tried to make them more vibrant than my usual fare. Though that didn´t quite succeed in all cases - particularly with the pinks (I think I need some more practice to nail those), all in all it turned out like I wanted it. It´s really got that old school, Realm of Chaos, vibe. The madly grinning shield and checkered border helps a lot in that respect of course...
After a quick look at the trusty old name generator table in Slaves to Darkness I´ve decided to call him Mandragore Warp-feather. It´s got a nice ring to it. I´d like to think the shield constantly argues with him.
The shield, incidentally, is called Klaus and speaks with a slightly effeminate german accent.

Here´s Mandragor facing of against the unsavoury followers of Nurgle led by the vile Mawgut Gloop.

  2. Amazing miniature! His name and the fluff about the shield are perfect! It's nice to see that last shot as well! You can really see the difference in your usual colour pallet.

  3. Shield is fantastic, but I especially love the yellow/gold armour - that really is superb.

    1. Thanks! Basically it´s just reikland flesh and sepia over a light bone undercoat. Then a some highlights and general fiddling about of course but sepia on white is great way to quickly get a nice natural yellow.

  4. I love everything about this post. Such nice minis, so much character both in the build and the paint :)

  5. God damn, the gradient you've achieved between the red and blue is amazing. Your signature splatters work really well here too. How do you do that, is it an undercoat thing or applied later?

I think it's entirely appropriate for Klaus to constantly make fun of Mandragore during combat, and should have an entirely library of bird-themed insults at his disposal.

    1. The "spatter" comes from the undercoat - my bone colour spray is a bit tempramental... It does create a rather interesting layer on top of chaos black though.

Klaus complains a lot in battle as people are prone to hit him.

    2. I have to agree with Dex - that skin gradient is immaculate!

  8. Klaus probably also does that thing Skyrim companions will do, of pointing out the cave or whatever that he and Mandragore just walked out of as if he's never seen it before... But Klaus just does it to be annoying.

    1. As I don't play Skyrim ( or any computer games) I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about...

  9. Awesome finished model! I said I was looking forward to seeing what ideas you would come up with regarding the shield and you haven't disappointed. I was confident enough that it was going to be good but this has exceeded all expectations!

It's a real pity that GW don't produce miniatures of this caliber anymore - but thankfully they do produce hundreds of usable parts!

    So what's next?

    1. They do produce rather amazing minis these days, but there's a charm and quirkiness to the old chaos champions that has proven hard to capture in plastic. The blightkings succeed though I must say.

Next up - tzaangor and more xenos!

  10. This embodies what I think Tzeentch should be. Bright organized colors, without being technicolor-gaudy monstrosities of pattern and contrast. It looks electric without being an eyesore. Well done.

    1. Thanks! Tzeentch is hard to paint - it's easy to get carried away with freehand swirls and stuff but I really tried to stay away from that. As you say it often gets way too busy.
