Oldhammer

I've been feeling a certain fatigue towards inq-themed grimdarkyness (though that's in all probability a passing phase) and have had a strong urge to paint something different. The question was what?

JRNs last post provided the answer - old school Kev Adams night goblins!!

A rummage around in the attic and a few hours of frenzied painting resulted in this little bugger. I've completely forgotten just how much fun these green smurfs are to paint.
..

Here's some snapshots of the process:

Bone basecoat

Foundation - kept the skin bright and the rest rather dark to provide contrast

Washes - skin camoshade, the rest earthshade and nuln oil

Highlights and glazes

Hexbase! Love the old-school feel of these.

Painted the base with GW textured paint

  1. Lovely bastard!
I am trying to assemble small Mordheim warband using only these oldies. Each of them really can tell some history!

  4. The painting is great! (Can't say I'm a fan of the sculpt though - those overly cartoony sculpts from the 90's just seemed too silly for my tastes.)

    1. Well, admittedly they do look like weapon wielding smurfs (I actually made a smurf themed bloodbowl team using blue goblins once...).

I am quite fond of these guys though, even if they´d look a bit out of place nowadays. A sense of humour is a fundamental aspect of the warhammer worlds IMHO - the same kind of dark British wit that permeates 2000AD comics like Judge Dredd. But of course there´s a difference between humorous and goofy...

  6. Nice! I really dig old school sculpts with modern paintjobs. The goblin looks great in your style.

    1. Thanks Ana! It was so much fun painting this old thing. At first I had planned to do a more old school paintjob - but in the end It felt more interesting painting it in as you say "my style".

  7. Awsome. And dead quick!
I think one of my personal likes about these old models is the fact that being one-piece casts they are fast to paint. There is a semi-flat front and a semi-flat back due to the production process and this lends itself to a fast paintjob.
I guess I ought to have a go at some of the more recent -one-piece plastics soon...

    1. Thanks mate!

Yeah, there are fever nooks and crannies and the models are simply just less detailed which is actually kind of nice. It's more up to the painter to provide the details - the model becomes more of a blank canvas. A canvas with tons of personality in the case of Kevs goblins of course...
Which plastic ones are you talking about? The new night goblin regiment? I'd love to see what you can do with those! Might have a try myself...:-)
