Plight of the Conchord

Carax's nemesis Inquisitor Conchord is starting to reach a presentable stage:

Not quite there yet, though... Been working on this guy for what seems like forever, and I'm still not quite happy with it. The face especially turned out a bit sloppy so I have to go back and fix that, plus some other details that need some more work.

John also suggested applying gloss varnish on the red armour bits which just might add that little extra umphh..,

  1. You have to trust John on that one ;)

  2. Maybe you could change the colour of the base? So it contrasts with his cloak. At the moment it sort of melds into one.

Don't get me wrong, I think he looks fantastic! Wish I could convert minis as well as you :)

    Cheers.

    1. Yeah - that´s certainly part of the problem. I added the black pattern at the bottom of his skirt to separate him from the base, but perhaps thats not enough...

  3. Another fantastic piece. That sword works wonderfully for balance.

    1. Thanks Dave!
It works quite well doesn´t it? Though the sword might appear ridiculously big at first, real greatswords were immense: http://www.thearma.org/images/S2000/New_Folder/p9160037.jpg

    1. Thanks Ana.
As always, I did lots of sketches of heraldry beforehand, only to chuck them completely out the window and just made it up as I went along when it actually came to painting the damn thing...

  5. He has the face of a lunatic. Brilliant and perfect for a faith frenzied Inquisitor.

  6. Lovely painting and conversion as usual ;)

I think that maybe the colour balance between the top half and the bottom half maybe a little off. The top has a lot of strong contrasting colours such as the blue and red. I wonder if adding maybe some candles (Red and yellow) on the base or some glowing blue script or runes on the black trim may balance it out a bit more?. (Just my humble opinion)

oh and the bret sheild looks ace, id, love to see the heraldry repeated on some crusader henchmen or even a banner bearer.

    1. Yeah - there´s some lack of contrast there. I have made the base slightly darker and added some decoration on Conchords skirt. I´ll post some new pics soon.

  7. I think the main issue you're running into is that the breastplate is painted a solid red, and that draws the eye away from the face. We all know red is the most eye-catching color, and by putting it directly below the face, it robs the face of the focus we normally give faces. Furthermore, the brown color of his hood seems to blend in with his flesh when juxtaposed with the bright, saturated red on his chest. It's a shame that a plain red breastplate should be the focal point of such an awesome model, especially considering all the other amazing freehand work done elsewhere on him. I think by adding more freehand work to the breastplate to break up the space, you'll have a much more desirable result. Maybe quarter the breastplate to mimic his heraldic shield, or add a white Inquisition logo? I think anything you do to break up that big, bright red space will go a long way to bringing this guy together.

You remain, as always, one of my biggest inspirations.

    1. You´re completely right and I´ve actually already added a white =I= symbol on his breastplate. Works much better.

  8. That is a terrific model and I have to agree with the comment from Dai, that angry facial expression and hood/cap makes him look like a hardcore fanatic (the huge sword helps to!). Great conversion, I always go away from this blog inspired.
