Hellboy 20 years

This might be rather unrelated to wargaming, but my favorite comic book "Hellboy" (and, incidentally, the favorite of just about every other illustrator I know...) celebrates it's 20th anniversery this year.

This is a big thing for me. Few things, except perhaps 40k, Star Wars and Bruce Timm's Animated Batman, has influenced me as much as an illustrator like Mike Mignola. Therefore I naturally wanted to celebrate this bidecennial in some way. So, without further ado - here's my homage to Mike's greatest creation:

Happy birthday Red!

  1. Fantastic! I too love Mignola's Hellboy. Such wonderful imagery, imagination, colour, and blend of story-telling and lore. Excellent piece, one I am sure would make him proud!

    1. Hard to say... he´s a grumpy guy from what I´ve gathered... ;-)

      Cheers mate!

  2. I'm a big Hellboy fan too, although I must admit my favourite Mignola publication is actually the Amazing Screw-On Head. ;)

Great illustration as well, I love how nonchalant he is having a smoke break after dealing with the beast!

    1. True. Screw-on head is probably the best single story he´s ever done. It´s just perfect.

But Hellboy is still my favorite character...

    2. Hellboy has some really good stories, I really enjoy the longer arcs but the short stories and one-shots are what I'm really drawn to.

      "Pancakes" is a classic!

    3. "The boy has eaten the pancakes" - "Truly this is our blackest hour"

Yeah, that a great example of his unbelievably economic storytelling. I like "Heads" as well.

      Hell - I like everything!!

  5. Can't say that I'm a big Hellboy fan. I've only seen the movies and, for the most part, found them pretty average. I do, however, love your piece of artwork! Great colours and the characters are just beautifully done :)

  6. I've only read the a couple of the books and watched the films and thoroughly enjoyed it all.

    Love the drawing.

Just so you know this is only slightly less geeky than painting little plastic miniatures while living with your parents ;-p
