Shields up!

There was something bugging me about the new plague-warrior, and after some contemplation I realised it was his shield. It just lacked a certain something.

So out with the fine brushes and this:

Turned into this:

This, in my eyes at least, is a huge improvement. It feels more stylized and heraldic and less like a cartoon mosquito.

Painting of the standardbearer has also begun. He's currently at the stage where I'm layering different washes to get the right disgusting look on his skin in general and tumorous left arm in particular.

  1. I like it, but didn't mind the old one. Feels a bit more like a mantis than a fly.

    1. Well - insectoid and agressive... I can swing with that!

  2. I liked the original, but the new shield is nice all the same! At the end of the day, he's your model and whatever makes you happiest with it goes! It'll look unreal regardless. Really looking forward to seeing the standard bearer painted. Have you been undercoating the models brown?

    1. This one only brown, yes. The other ones brown first followed by a zenithal spray of bone.

    2. Really nice effect! Do you use Citadel paints exclusively, Jeff? I'm not sure if I've asked you this before.

    3. No - the sprays are for instance Army Painter. Other than that I mix and match, but I mainly stick to GW paints. The new paints are great and have a very high amount of pigments. The downside is that they dry up wery fast...

  3. Like the other chaps before, I was a fan of the first design, but this is likewise very well done.

The Standard Bearer is coming along very nicely.
