The axe man cometh

Here's the finished axe man for my Outgard crew. In hindsight I should perhaps have reversed the colours of the cowl and his robes: black robes and red cowl. A darker character would have suited the setting better. On the other hand I'm rather pleased with how the red turned out. Oh well...

Calling this guy The Hound of Rotwang.

    1. Thank you Tim. I do have a preference for these sort of grounded, archetypical characters. We'll have none of that dynamic jumping around here, no sir.

    2. No, we don't like jumping. White men are terrible at it, anyway.

  4. He turned out with the regular level of excellence. Interesting how much he looks like your rpg character drawings, just a tad darker.

    1. Yeah I thought about that too. There's a certain amount of cross pollination I suppose.

  5. Bang on. Brilliant miniature that screams Vader at me. I like the red and I think it makes him look dangerous. His helmet makes him look sinister. So best of both as far as I'm concerned.

I am gutted I didn't pick up a box of Brets before they were destroyed :-(

    1. Thanks Pete. Glad you dig!

I also forgot to pick up a box of men at arms when they went away. Down to my last few now...

  6. So good Johan. The red and blacks are ace as they are. It makes his stuff on the back stand more out too. The shield is gorgeously Outgardish.

Agree with Fulgrim. Characters like the Axeman are your trademark!

    1. Cheers!

I couldn't come up with anything new for the smaller shield, and didn't want to repeat the crowned skull motif, so I just went with checkers. Worked out pretty well in the end.

  10. He's really awesome, Johan! The colour work - the combination of colours - are just perfect. I think, you could write a book about painting miniatures and colour work. I would definitly buy it! #shutupandtakemymoney :D

  13. Your painting style is just so perfect for this project and model itself! Truly inspirational, although that's nothing new. . .

  14. Sorry to comment on such an old article - but how do you do shields like this? The weathering is perfect
