Big xenos

After the completion of the Diva the focus is back on the xenos trio for the Iron Sleet Invitational. Here's a mockup of the big guy on a 60mm base ( part of the challenge is to use bases of different size for all three models).

Not sure about the mask as it does makes him look a bit like a grotesque. On the other hand it does fit rather perfectly... But I'm looking for other options. If anybody's got a spare dark elf cold one head lying around I'd be very interested indeed..

The Diva beside it for size reference.

  1. Pwaah! Brutal looking fellow indeed! I think the mask looks well, but maybe add some pipes or random bolts to take away a bit of the grotesque look? Cables from the top of the head into the hole on his back? Texture the helmet a little with liquid greenstuff or something to reduce the smoothness? I'm sure whatever you do it'll look the business.

    1. Cheers Jordan! We'll see what happens. I've got some alternative heads on the way - might take another route in the end...

  3. Kinda looks like a 40k version of Bane, just need some tubes feeding him from the tanks on his back ;)

I think theres a lot of promise in the rat ogre kit for some hulking monstrosities, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the rest of the parts.

The only thing about the mask, is that covering the face you don't get to see just how 'alien' the xenos is, think back to the predator and how before the mask came off he could have been human, once you see whats underneath theres no doubt about its unearthly origin.

    1. Yeah, that's sort of the my gripe with it - I'd like to show the face as that's what really defines it as an alien. Though one wouln't really mistake this guy for a human...

    2. Maybe you could cut the mask in half and have something gribbly where the mouth would be? The jaw of a cold one would be an interesting combination if you went down the reptilian route.

    3. If you've got a spare cold one noggin' I'm all ears!

    4. I think Ed's idea of taking off the lower half of the mask and replacing it with something suitably alien is excellent! It wouldn't even have to bee a cold one head to begin with -- what about some Yrmgarl Genestealer head tentacles? Or a Genestealer/Carnifex set of jaws? Or a split jaw? In any case, you'll have to change something about the mask -- it instantly reads as a Grotesque right now, like you said.

    5. Agreed! I'm on the case!

  4. Ha! Amazing looking beast. I have me one of those Stormfiends to form the base of 40K Kroxigor brute.

I think the mask - as you say - might be the weakest point. I am trying to get hold of a hydra head from a Dark Elf Hydra seeing as it is a decent size and reptilian (assuming it scales well with the body)

    1. Cheers mate!

I think the hydra heads look way to big for use on this model. Also they're rather poor sculpts in my opinion - not a fan of Trish's monsters...
But cold ones on the other hand...

    2. cold ones - hadn't thought of them, presumably he Dark Elf ones rather than the absurd looking Lizardmen ones. I will have to check out hydra heads and see ho they scale up, some at my local GW will have some.

    3. Haha! Yeah - I was referring to the dark elf ones. The lizardman cold ones look like... I don't know WHAT they look like. Spiky malformed dogs or something...

However I am quite fond of the old plastic "godzilla" cold ones: http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/27/287595.png

  5. Great progress with your first model for the Invitational! The posing looks fantastic. Any sense what you will do with his base to elevate his right foot?

While I like his mask, I think it is too strongly associated with the Dark Eldar to leave unmodified.

Also maybe you want to remove the stitching on his arms and stuff? Or do you want him to look like a creature sewn together from multiple creatures? I guess that would sort of fit with the buzz-saw arm?

What are your thoughts about the background for the alien? That might help focus your ideas.

    1. Cheers Adam!

      - The foot will probably stand on a cliff or something similar. Perhaps some city rubble. I don´t like the " pile of dead enemies" look as I prefer my bases fairly neutral.

      - Yep. The mask probably wont be the part of the final mini because of the reasons discussed above. Sure looks good though.

      - I´ve removed the fur but will keep the stitches. They look cool and doesn´t necessarily mean he was cobbled together from different creatures. He could just lead an active lifestyle.

      - I´ll normally go mini first - background later, so we´ll just have to wait and see how the final mini turns out.

  6. Damn! That "stormtalos" is ace! Looks so brutal, just thinking by it's instinct! IMO, the chainsaw doesn't work very much... mybe the choc gauntlet with a bit of vestigal armes on it could make an interesting thing... Keep on the good work

    1. Yeah - I think this layout proves that the kit easily could be used as an alternative talos engine -(it´s waaaay to huge to be a grotesque really)

Not with you re: the buzzsaw. I really like it. But of course it is just bluetacked on at the moment so it´ll be much more integrated in the final version.
